Training

To provide a study programme to train young local people to practise as traditional tibetan medical doctors within the local communities.

Traditionally the training was long and rigourous and started at a very young age when the young doctor was in his or her teens. The memorisation of all one hundred and fifty six chapters of the of the Four Medical Tantras as well as training in being able to identify hundreds of medicinal plants by tasting them blindfolded was the normal standard. After six or seven years of the theoretical training followed by two years under the guidance of a fully qualified and experienced doctor the training was complete.

The Sowa Rigpa Institute will develop a curriculum suitable for training doctors.
