The Sowa Rigpa Institute of Sikkim
Development and Conservation of Traditional Tibetan herbal medicine in the sikkim himalayas.
The Sowa Rigpa Institute of Sikkim is being established in Gangtok, Sikkim, India in order to preserve and also develop the ancient medicinal art of herbal healing that has been practised throughout the Himalayan region for thousands of years. Renowned for its efficacy and direct treatment methods it is proving to be an invaluable resource for our modern societies. This system of healing has also just been recognised by The Indian Government in 2009, which makes the development of the Institute a very timely project.
The development of such an institute is the heart wish of the Venerable Ringu Tulku Rinpoche Dr. Tashi Namgyal Surkhang, and the Venerable Nangsi Dorjee Rinpoche. Although they are all native to The Tibetan plateau of the Himalayas, they have resided in Sikkim for some fifty years with their families. It is through this long connection with the Sikkim Himalayas that it is their wish to bring about an Institute specifically for Sikkim and its people.
The Institute is being established to conserve and develop the ancient medical system of healing in the Himalayas known as Sowa Rigpa or Tibetan Medicine.
The Sowa Rigpa Institute of Sikkim proposes to undertake five aspects to cover in its activities to raise awareness of the efficacy of this ancient herbal tradition for everyone nowadays.
The Institute will cover;
- Training in tibetan medicine for local people to become doctors;
- A clinic offering consultations and medicine;
- An apothecary making medicines;
- Research into the effectiveness of tibetan medicine in our contemporary cultures and development of medicinal compounds
- Medicinal plant conservation and cultivation
